Will your business web site be viewable on mobile phones? It should be if you want to fully participate in the hundreds of billion dollars of business-to-business and retail sales accruing from the Internet.

Although smart cell phones can view most web site content, they remain a minority of outstanding phones. In order to insure your company web site is mobile ready, you need a version that employs a liquid (no fixed dimensions) layout, detects the visitor browser type and directs to the correct display – PC or cell phone. A mobile ready upgrade can be done in three ways, depending upon the importance of this audience to your business.

Single Page Mobile Site

Basic information with logo, phone number, email, etc with a link to the full business web site.

Mini-Mobile Web Site

Multiple page website as pictured. Individual pages such as:

Home

a. Matches web site colors to keep branding
b. Company logo plus slogan at top
c. Phone number front and center with link to full site
d. Buttons linking other pages– For example,
“About Us” “Services” “Products” etc. that give detail

About Us – Several paragraphs about company

Services – Paragraphs describing services

Products – Product listing

Contact Us – Phone/address/email/fax etc

Full Mobile Ready Web Site

This involves doing a page-by-page redesign as was done for the site — http://www.ez-dock.com. Note: Try this link with both a regular browser and mobile phone to see how it auto detects the accessing device so the same URL gives a mobile or PC web site version.

An often overlooked area in web design is website performance on different. Web users are expecting a pleasant web experience. There is a cost to not optimizing to different browsers. According to the Website Magazine, 67 percent of users encounter a slow website a few times a week or more. Also, 46 percent say slow load times cause them to abandon websites. In addition, over a third of respondents say that slowness makes them less likely to return to the site. These statistics show that it is imperative to optimize browser performance to keep users on websites, which has potential for more sales.

When designing a web site, the web designer should realize that different browser platforms perform in different ways. The audience needs to be considered when designing a web site. If you have a website with users that use different browsers, it is recommended to view your website in different browsers. You do this to make sure that the navigation, style and website structure are intact. This not only applies to various browsers but also various versions of browsers. Not all of the users will have the newest browser that a web designer is using. Therefore, it is important to test your website in different browsers.

Usually there is a huge gap in making a web site look good and making it optimized. To add animations and cool effects you either need to use Flash, which cannot be indexed by search engines, or you need to use JavaScript, which is extremely difficult and time consuming.

But there’s good news on the horizon. CSS 3 is currently being drafted, and is providing some awesome animation and graphics tools to web designers. The best part? CSS code allows HTML to be animated, but can be fully indexed by the search engines.

What does this mean? It means that the gap between a great looking site and a well optimized site is slowly becoming smaller. Safari and Google Chrome for example already support some of the most popular CSS3 drafts. If you have the current versions of one of these browsers, check out: http://www.zurb.com/playground. ZURB interactive has been playing around with CSS3 and has come up with some really cool stuff.

My personal favorite is the CSS3 dock. It imitates the Mac OS X dock for navigation. It looks really awesome and allows search engines to index the navigation just like any other set of links. This is a really exciting development.

There are some issues however. First off, the most popular browser of today is Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has a long history of not adopting the W3C’s (World Wide Web Consortium) standards. (It is the only major browser not to). This means that web designers will have to design their sites in such a way that it still displays ok to Internet Explorer users. (And maybe show them a message that they are not getting a full internet experience.)

Another problem is hardware. These new features are resource intensive. The browsers need to have efficient display engines to display these effects, and probably should have hardware acceleration (which most browsers do not).

These are really the only issues, and I am looking forward to the CSS3 changes coming to the market. So get your hands dirty and start learning some CSS3!

If you use images in your web pages, it is good practice to include Alt text for every image that a visitor to your site will see. ALT tags filled with keywords can also be used to boost your keyword frequency and help you achieve better rankings. Many businesses disregard image SEO or do it incorrectly. They are missing out on an easy opportunity for better rankings.. Images that have no text describing what they are cannot be read by the search engines. Search engines rely on things like tags, captions, and file names to identify proper index images.

The ALT tag is designed to help visually impaired visitors to determine what the images contain, by allowing you to specify some alternative text. When a visitor points the mouse over an image with the alt tag, the text is shown. Search engines have the same problem as visually impaired users have, they cannot see the images. Images have no meaning to search engines. Search engines can only see the image tag’s text. Therefore it is of vital importance that you tag the images on your with their content.

When retailers think about redesigning their web sites, they expect the redesign to boost their sales immediately. Before doing the redesign, retailers need to figure what consumers want to do and how easy it will be to satisfy them.

Shoppers visit ecommerce web sites not only to make purchases, but to gather product information, read or write product reviews etc. It is important that the site design allows the consumers to easily find what they are looking for. For example, if the customer wants to get additional product details or read reviews, there needs to be a clear path. Sites that make it easy for consumers to accomplish their goals build long-term loyalty.

Once the retailer has a well designed site, they need to address how to get visitors to the site. An Internet Retailer Survey reports that 40.2% of the respondents would like the search engines to get them visitors. This is done by a process of search engine optimization (SEO). Moreover, 27.8% of the respondents would like to have more community features, which is done by using social media.

Social media is a major source of information for consumers. A social network presence can help drive traffic back to a retailer’s site. This trend is prompting many retailers to participate in social networks and be part of that information exchange.

How does your web site design look these days? Does your web design look professional compared to your competitors? Do the links work properly on your web site and does your web site download fast?

If the answer is no, it is time to change your web site to a professional web design. After all, image is everything. You do not go on job interview with ripped jeans and expect to be hired. You dress for the job that you want and those that look the part get the job.

Web site appearance needs to be kept up as well as the web site copy. Every word on your web site needs to be read over. The web site copy needs to be error free and look professional. First impressions do matter and often times your business is judged by how well written the copy and design is. Furthermore, the time is now to update your web site design and copy because your competitor is just one click away.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a format for laying out html content, commissioned by the W3C. When HTML was first created, it was a format for documents. There were ways to format text, (making it bold, changing the size, color, etc.), there were ways to insert images, but there wasn’t really a way to layout a page. People who really knew HTML began using tables to lay out pages, since it was the only real way to control page layout. Tables were actually designed for putting tabular data into pages, but that didn’t stop anybody. It wasn’t until 1996 that a standardized way for laying out web pages was developed (CSS 1.0), and even then it wasn’t adopted, mainly because the standard wasn’t fully supported by any browser until three years later in 1999 (CSS 2.0 was released in 1998.

CSS has slowly replaced tables for web design, but not completely. There is still a long way to go. Many modern websites (and their designers) fail to adopt CSS for their designs, and continue to use tables. In this post, we hope to explain the advantages to learning CSS, and using it to lay out HTML content instead of using tables.

There are many advantages to using CSS to lay out pages. Here are the most prevalent:

Speed: CSS takes much less code than tables, therefore pages tend to load faster.

Interoperability: CSS code can be altered and re-used rapidly on new sites and pages, because it is separate from the content of a page.

Compatibility: Because CSS is a standardized language, code written for one browser will (if written properly), look the same on all browsers supporting the standard.

Features: CSS has many ways of laying out a page and its elements, and therefore pages utilizing CSS can look more appealing than pages laid out in HTML.

Modularity: CSS defines the style of certain HTML tags. Therefore parts of a CSS file can be re-used on new CSS with no changes necessary.

These are just some of the advantages to designing a page/site using CSS. To get started learning CSS, we recommend you try the W3C’s CSS tutorial (http://www.w3schools.com/css/)

The next standard of CSS that the W3C is working on, CSS 3, is going to have some great new features. Many of them are leaning toward cool visual effects. So if you adopt CSS now, you will be ready to utilize the new features of CSS 3 when it is released. Here are some of the things that the W3C is cooking up:

2D Transforms

3D Transforms

Transitions

Animations

If this article confuses you, or you don’t want to do any design, try hiring a web design company like RP Design to design your next web site.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), founded in October of 1994, sets the current standards for valid HTML and CSS code. If your code does not meet these standards, this is a large problem, and should be fixed as soon as possible. Here are some issues that can arise if your code does not the HTML and CSS standards:

Pages do not display correctly in browsers, which can cause a whole number of problems.

Search engines cannot index your pages due to them not being able to read badly crafted code.

Modern design software cannot edit your pages correctly due to invalid code.

Adapting your pages to updated code standards becomes more difficult if you do not keep up with them.

Creating mobile versions of pages is very difficult with invalid pages to begin with.

So how do you check if you pages are valid? First off, you need to check your HTML code. Use the W3C’s Markup Validator Tool. Just enter the URL of your sites, and look at the results. Next you should probably check for broken links. Using the W3C’s Link Checker, you can find broken links in pages, invalid links, etc. Last, but certainly not least, you need to check your CSS code to ensure it is valid, and will display correctly on all browsers and platforms. Use the CSS Validator to ensure that your site meets the W3C CSS standards.

These tools will:

If your pages are valid, inform you of the standards that your pages meet, as well as give you embed code to put a badge on your site demonstrating the validity.

If they are not valid, it will give you a list of things that are invalid, so you can get to work fixing them.

Fixing invalid pages will allow your site to benefit greatly, but perhaps you are not skilled enough to fix them yourself. A web design company such as RP Design can fix the issues for you to ensure your pages are validated.
